Sleeping Bags: Down Vs. Synthetic

When buying sleeping bags there is a huge arguement as to whether it’s better to buy a down filled or synthetic filled.

When winter backpacking this winter I brought my synthetic bag and found that it worked great in our igloo because even though it was so damp and wet my synthetic sleeping bag kept its warmth.

The Igloo we built

My friend that I was hiking with had a nice big down bag and by the 5th night of damp wet conditions his bag wasn’t very warm any more because the water resistant coating that was on the outside to keep the wet out got warn off so he was left quite cold in his damp down bag.
