Backpacking The Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian trail is a marked hiking trail through the Eastern United States From Georgia all the way to Maine and it now continues up through Canada to end at the Atlantic Ocean.  It is approximately 2181 miles (3510 km) and runs the length of the Appalachian Mountains.

A few years ago I hiked 11 days on The Appalachian Trail through The Smokey Mountains.  I loved it!  The best part about the Appalachian trail is that you don’t have to pack a tent because there are these lean-to cabins to sleep in that are open on one side.

You still need to pack a sleeping mat and each camp sight does have a water source though I would still recommend bringing your water purifier.  A huge added bonus is that each campsite also has it’s own privy or thunder box.

I hope to one day complete the entire Appalachian Trail.  It takes 5 – 7 months to complete the entire thing but it would be an experience to remember for life.
